Tamotsu Sakamoto has been an amateur pitcher in Japan for several years, starting in 1992 out of high school. He has spent his career with Honda. He went 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA for the Japanese national team in the 2003 Baseball World Cup. He allowed one run in 2 1/3 IP in 3 games as a LOOGY during the 2004 Haarlem Baseball Week. In the 2005 Baseball World Cup, he struggled, going 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA; in 9 1/3 innings, he struck out 12 but walked 7 and allowed 13 hits. He took Japan's only two losses of the tournament, to Puerto Rico and to South Korea. The latter loss, in game one of the quarterfinals, eliminated Japan from medal contention.
