Talk:Sam Khalifa

From BR Bullpen

"The only player to be drafted 7th overall and play shortstop in the major leagues. " What does that mean? In the history of the draft the 7th pick has never been a mlb shortstop? pti

I meant that no player ever drafted #7 has appeared in a MLB game as a shortstop with the exception of Mr. Khalifa. - Mischa

Is there a good reason why or is it just a fluke? You'd expect that a lot of high draft picks are shortstops.--Pti 21:34, 2 Oct 2005 (EDT)

No idea. There have been at least 5 #8 picks at short (Jay Bell being the only one who had a long career so far) and 5 picked 6th (including Derek Jeter and Spike Owen), but #7 falls short. They're weak at IF spots in general - only Rick Cerone, Dan Wilson, Khalifa and Ray Fosse played either second or third (none played more than a game at either spot). That's why I thought it was neat trivia. Looking further, Khalifa is the only non-1B infielder ever selected 7th. - Mischa

Seven years later, and this discussion still is true. --Jeff 13:56, 5 January 2013 (EST)
