Is Mattingly's quote a compliment or a jab?

Its listed in both the 1988 and 1990 Registers. Maybe he only had a tryout? or was injured and never actually played? --Jeff 12:38, 22 September 2011 (EDT)

Or had a really short career (under 10 games) and never got into a Baseball Guide, so isn't listed? Or the info is wrong? You'd figure black players were still rare enough in 1949 that his signing would have made news. - --Mischa 12:49, 22 September 2011 (EDT)
