He was inducted into the United States Air Force before the 1941 season and became one of only four major leaguers ever to die in combat when his plane was shot down over France in 1944. (emphasis mine)
The United States Air Force did not become that until September 18, 1947. Chances are that Joe Gedeon joined the United States Army Air Corps (July 2, 1926 to June 20, 1941), but I have not yet researched this. --Mdaubrey 12:05, 25 June 2010 (EDT)
