Talk:Frank Calo
I'm leaving 1951 blank as Doyle accidentally lists the same stats as 1950 (.292-1-63 for Lamesa-Clovis). My 1951 Guide confirms the stats as being the ones from the earlier season. Does someone have a 1952 Guide to check this out? - --Mischa 04:32, 25 June 2006 (EDT)
Doyle has Calo at .291-1-81 in '52, which is incorrect. Maybe this was his '51 line. Can someone confirm and give the team? - --Mischa 04:46, 25 June 2006 (EDT)
I also will need someone to add Calo's managerial record in. - --Mischa 04:52, 25 June 2006 (EDT)
Anyone know if Calo is a WW II Vet? --Ron 06:52, 25 June 2006 (EDT)
When did he play for the Daytona Beach Islanders? Also, I was able to find no enlistee with the name "Frank Calo" with the same birth year. --MichaelEng 12:07, 25 June 2006 (EDT)
Daytona Beach was 1960. - --Mischa 13:01, 25 June 2006 (EDT)
Bob Bauer managed the Danville Warriors in 1970 --Just me 23:22, 25 June 2006 (EDT)
I'm wondering what was going on in Danville in 1970 now. The 1971 Guide lists only Bauer as manager, but MWLGuide.com lists both as manager [1]. --Jeff 03:04, 18 September 2009 (EDT)
From Joel Dinda, who runs MWLGuide.com:
Sure, Jeff; this one annoyed me for years. Here's a note I wrote about Danville's manager in the under-construction SABR Encyclopedia:
Despite what all the standard sources say, Bob Bauer did not manage the 1970 Danville Warriors. I received an email note from Danville fan Bill Wynn on 1/31/2001 discussing this; it seems Bauer was scheduled to be manager but took ill shortly before the season began. Frank Calo was recruited in his place; Bauer (who was a local resident) apparently continued as the team's GM. Some of this was confirmed by a 5/4/2007 email from 1970 Danville Player Scotty Kurtz. Confirmation (as provided by Jerry Jackson and Jack Morris--thanks!):
- The Quincy Herald Whig listed Calo as Danville's manager on 4/26/70.
- The Appleton Post-Crescent mentioned Calo as Danville's manager on 7/9/70 in an article on the league All-Star game.
- The Syracuse Herald Journal mentioned Calo as Danville's manager on 9/27/70; he was planning at that time to return.
What I can't explain is why the 1971 TSN Guide (and the Minor League Baseball Encyclopedia, which is likely based on the Guide) have Bauer listed as MWL Manager of the Year. That needs further investigation.
So it appears it was Calo and not Bauer. --Jeff 12:31, 18 September 2009 (EDT)
