Talk:Dick Allen

From BR Bullpen

You mention Dick from the 1970 Cardinals team. Did you know that Dick missed 40 games that year due to an achilles tear. I wonder what the Cardinals record was when he was injured. Furthermore, Dick didn't pitch for the Cardinals. Their staff ERA was up over a run a game. That's why they didnt win. Regarding 1974, Dick retired from Baseball in early September that year. The White Sox talked him into not filing formal papers with Major League Baseball. Why can't people accept the facts about Dick. Yes he could be a pain, but so have many players, ie; Ted Williams, Ty Cobb, Reggie Jackson, on and on and on. Dick lost half the year to injuries in 1973. Injuries cut down his career. He was a Great Player. Articles like yours always portray Dick in a negative light. Yet many of his contemporaries speak of Dick in glowing terms. Umpires loved him. See Tom Gormans book(Three and Two). There is no question Dick made many mistakes but there is no question that Race problems in Phila during the 1960's contributed to him problems. Imagine if you were called Nigger and worse, receiving crank calls, death threats, trash thrown on your lawn. How would you react. Dick is employed by the Phillies and has been for several years now. I'll always remember him. Jim

This is a one sided viewpoint, hardly worthy of being treated as some sort of encyclopedic entry. Read the following article which actually, gasp, interviewed people who were there!
