Talk:Clinton Cubs
When I was scouting for the Cubs during the 1980s, I would occasionally come into contact with a former major league pitcher named Dean Stone. Mr. Stone had a fairly long career in the big leagues, pitching for the Senators, the Red Sox, and the Colt .45s. The first organization he told me for which he pitched was Washington. I think he had a record of 13-11 one year (1954 maybe) for the Senators which, considering those ball clubs, was a pretty good year. Mr. Stone told me, though, that the Senators were not the first team to sign him to a minor league contract. He told me he was signed by the Cubs (I think in 1948), and sent to the Clinton affiliate. He told me he broke a finger or had some injury shortly after signing with the Cubs, and never appeared in a game for Clinton. The Cubs released him and he then signed with the Senators in 1949. Mr. Stone told me that he won the 1954 (I think) All-Star game, throwing only a few pitches (maybe three). He came into the game with at least one runner on, and proceeded to pick him off first. This was the year that he probably was 13-11 for the Senators. So although Mr. Stone never pitched in the Cubs organization, he did, however, have a connection with their Clinton farm club.
