Talk:40-40 club
How about the 300-300 Club? This is the career equivalent of the 30-30 only it's much more more rare.
Until 2006 there were only four members of the 300 career home runs and 300 career stolen bases club.
The previous members are Willie Mays, Bobby Bonds, Barry Bonds, and Andre Dawson (a point that should be brought up by his HOF supporters).
In 2006, the group was joined by
Reggie Sanders and Steve Finley (both just barely).
I think this category is an incredible testement to all around athleticism and longevity. Sanders and Finley should be crowing long and loud about it, but I haven't heard it even mentioned!
If Craig Biggio gets 19 more home runs (perhaps a challenge if he retires after this year) then he will be the seventh member of this club. With the 70 more total hits that everyone expects him to get, Craig would be only the second member of the 3,000 hits, 300 home runs, 300 stolen base club. Willie Mays is currently the sole owner of that distinction. If Barry Bonds plays long enough he wil almost certainly also get 3,000 hits. Bonds needs only 159 more hits to join Mays and maybe Biggio, but since we walks so often in will take him two seasons.
Among other active players, A-Rod has a good shot at 300-300, but his season stolen base numbers are starting to drop and once that happens it can fall quickly. So he may never get there. Alfonso Soriano should fly through 300-300 in three seasons at his current pace. Carlos Beltran would seem like a shoo-in, but again, the season stolen bases numbers for him are down the last two years. That what makes the club so difficult and a testement to the durability and skill of those attain it.
Thank you for your attention.

It is a nice bit of trivia but I doubt Sanders and Finley will go down as all-time greats because they had a nice combination of speed and power. This remainds me of the "We-Can-Make-a-Group Argument" for the Hall of Fame debunked by Bill James in Whatever Happened to the Hall of Fame? - --Mischa 10:39, 18 March 2007 (EDT)
If you didn't know the list and were trying to guess, how many names would you list before getting to Reggie Sanders?? --Jeff 00:48, 25 March 2007 (EDT)
Oodles. - --Mischa 15:37, 25 March 2007 (EDT)
