Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher T.J. Sikkema was selected with the 38th overall pick in the Competitive Balance Round A of the 2019 amateur draft, by the New York Yankees out of the University of Missouri. He was the second player taken by the Yankees that year, following Anthony Volpe, picked 30th overall. The Yankees, of course, don't normally benefit from competitive balance picks, large revenue team that they are, but they obtained that one from the Cincinnati Reds in a trade for P Sonny Gray. At Missouri, T.J. went 7-4, 1.32 as a junior. His signing bonus was reported to be $1.95 million.

In his professional debut in 2019, he made 4 starts and pitched 10 2/3 innings for the Staten Island Yankees of the New York-Penn League, giving up just 1 run for an 0.84 ERA. However, he then missed all of the next two seasons: 2020 because the minor leagues were shut down by the Coronavirus pandemic, and 2021 because of a shoulder injury. In 2022, he was assigned to the Hudson Valley Renegades of the South Atlantic League and was 1-1, 2.48 in 11 games as a starter before being traded to the Kansas City Royals on July 27th in return for All-Star OF Andrew Benintendi. Joining him in heading to K.C. were two other pitching prospects, Chandler Champlain and Beck Way.
