Stretch
The stretch position, or set position is one of two legal pitching positions allowed by the rules, the other being the windup. In this position, the pitcher stands facing third base if right-handed, or first base if left-handed, with his back foot in contact with the pitching rubber. He then steps directly towards home plate to throw his pitch, or towards the base if attempting a pick-off. He must also come to a complete pause at some point. Failure to either pause or step directly towards the base or home will result in a balk being called.
The stretch position is usually sued with runners on base, as it is much quicker to the plate than the windup and helps in cutting down the running game. It is also used by some pitchers who prefer it because its mechanics are simpler, even though it provides less opportunity to use leerage from the legs to increase a pitch's velocity.
