Biographical Information[edit]

Stew "Doc" Bowers played three years in the major leagues. He was one of the youngest players in the American League during his first two seasons. Stew was at Gettysburg College in 1935 and made his major league debut with the Boston Red Sox that August. He pitched in 10 games with an ERA of 3.42, better than the team ERA of 4.05. He was little more than half the age of Lefty Grove, one of the older pitchers on the team. His sole appearance of the 1937 season was as a pinch-runner and not as a pitcher. Bowers also pitched in the minors from 1936 to 1941 and served in the United States military during World War II.

Bowers' son, Stewart Bowers, pitched in the minor leagues from 1959-1963, reaching AA.

After baseball, he worked for the American Insulator Company and the Ford Motor Company until his retirement. He passed away on December 14, 2005, at 90.
