Biographical Information

Right-hander Steve Peek was signed as an amateur free agent by the New York Yankees before the 1937 season. He spent four years in the minors (1937-1940), having his best season in 1940 with the Newark Bears of the International League, winning 14 and losing but 4 with a 2.69 ERA in 144 innings, helping his team to the league play-off championship.

Steve looked strong in the 1941 spring training workouts and made his debut with the Yankees on April 16th. He appeared in 17 outings, pitching 80 innings and built a 4-2 record before being sent back to Newark for the balance of the season. Steve went 3-1 with a 1.50 ERA for the IL team and missed his chance to play in a World Series when the Yankees won the American League title by 17 games over the second-place Boston Red Sox. The Yankees beat the 1941 National League Champion Brooklyn Dodgers 4 games to 1 in the 1941 World Series. Peek did not play in the series and never returned to the major leagues.

Steve spent the next four years (1942-1945) with the United States Army in the European Theater of Operations during World War II.

He returned from the service in time for the 1946 season, at the age of 31, and spent the rest of his baseball career in the minors, with the Newark club again before finished out in 1948 with the Seattle Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League. Steve's eight seasons in the minors saw him build a 73-44 record while appearing in 186 outings and pitching 974 innings.

After baseball, Peek moved to Syracuse, NY, where he lived and worked until his death at the Veterans Hospital in Syracuse on September 20, 1991.
