Biographical Information[edit]
Harry "Steamboat" Johnson was a long-time minor league umpire who also spent one season as a National League official, in 1914. In 1935, he published his memoirs under the title Standing the Gaff. The book is considered a classic of baseball writing and has been reprinted a number of times since.
