Ty Cobb spiking Home Run Baker

Spiking is an illegal move in baseball in which a player tries to intentionally harm another player or breaks up a play with an unnecessary amount of roughness using his cleats. Players such as Ty Cobb and Edd Roush were notorious for spiking other players. This tactic was more commonly seen in the 19th century and early 1900s than today. Cleveland Spiders' manager Patsy Tebeau used to order his entire team to sharpen their spikes in order to make it worse on their opponents. [1] Patricularly egregious spiking incidents would often lead to on-field brawls.
