Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Walter Diehl played in the minor leagues from 1906 to 1914. He spent four years with the Pekin Celestials, longer than any other club. Though he usually hit around what would become the Mendoza Line, he managed a .307 average in 293 at-bats for the Champaign Velvets in 1913. With Pekin in 1912, he hit .266 with 115 hits in 117 games and with the same club in 1909, he managed his other 100-hit season, collecting 108 knocks in 121 games for a .237 mark. He tied Charles O'Berta with the Illinois-Missouri League lead in runs in 1910, with 72.
Baseball Reference lists him as a manager of the Taylorville Tailors in 1908, though the Bullpen does not concur. He managed the Celestials in 1909, replacing Skinny Horton and being replaced by Bill Dithridge.
