Southern Tech was known as Southern Technical Institute from 1949 to 1987 and Southern College of Technology from 1987 to 1996. At least 25 players from the Hornet program have played professional baseball, with 19 being drafted by MLB organizations directly from Southern Poly. Alumni include Greg Hendrix, Tom Paciorek Jr., Gary Owens, David Harden, Andry Dirksz, Casey Shiver, Matt Kimbrel, Will Rankin, Sean Teague, Mark Doll, Joe Billick and Nick Blount.
After the 2013-2014 school year, Southern Polytechnic State was consolidated into Kennesaw State University.
