Biographical Information[edit]
Soo-hyuk Lim was a catcher for the Lotte Giants from 1994 to 2000.
Lim was drafted by Lotte in 1992 but missed the next couple seasons due to military service. He was 0 for 7 with a HBP for the South Korean national team in the 1990 Baseball World Cup, backing up Kwang-ho Jang at DH. He helped them win Silver in the 1993 Asian Championship. He debuted in 1994 and hit .250/.375/.275 in 29 games. In '95, he became a regular and batted .247/.310/.461 with 15 home runs in 271 AB. The next year, Lim hit .311/.385/.458 with 76 RBI. Kyung-wan Park beat him out for honors as the top catcher in the Korea Baseball Organization.
Lim produced at a .248/.368/.407 rate in 1997 then .247/.327/.384 in '98. In 1999, he hit .250/.310/.402 in 112 AB over 73 games. He started 2000 strong, going 5 for 19 with 3 homers, a double, a walk and 7 RBI.
On April 18, 2000, during a game against the LG Twins, Lim collapsed due to a heart arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat}. After failing to receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation on time, he fell into a coma. His family sued both clubs for not providing adequate medical services at the ballpark, and they eventually settled out of court. He passed away in February 2010, after spending nearly ten years in a vegetative state.
