Biographical Information

Joseph "Skippy" Roberge played baseball for the Boston Braves in 1941-42 and 1946. He had around 170 at-bats each year.

Roberge was born, and died, in Lowell, MA. Before coming to the majors he had played for Bradford, Evansville and Hartford. After his days in the majors he played for Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Toronto and Little Rock. His peak batting average was .315 with Milwaukee in 1947 - among others, he out-hit Al Dark (.303) and Danny Murtaugh (.302).

The Baseball in Wartime site has a biography of him. He was a big athletic star in high school, playing baseball (he pitched and played shortstop), basketball and football. His pro baseball career was interrupted by time in the service - he entered in January 1943 and was discharged in January 1946. He played service ball (and was named to the service all-star team by the Army Times) but was also wounded in action in 1945. His combat injuries, along with his three years away from baseball, made it difficult for him to break back into the majors, although he succeeded in 1946. He played in the minors and in semi-pro ball, and later worked for General Electric.
