Biographical Information

Simón Barreto pitched in the US and Venezuela.

Barreto debuted as a pro with the 1970-1971 Leones del Caracas, going 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA in four outings. Despite his brief action, he won Rookie of the Year for the Venezuelan League. He was 1-4 with two saves and a 6.29 ERA in 29 games for the 1971 Sumter Astros. That winter, he allowed one earned run in two innings for Caracas. He split 1972 between the Ogden Dodgers (2-1, 3 Sv, 1.73, 29 K in 26 IP) and Spokane Indians (1-1, 3.71 in 9 G). In the winter of 1972-1973, he allowed one earned run in 2 2/3 IP for the Leones but gave up six hits and three walks.

Pitching in 1973 for the Bellingham Dodgers (3-2, 2.00 in 26 G) and Daytona Beach Dodgers (1-1, 3 Sv, 5.54), he ended his US career. He was 4th in the Northwest League in games pitched. He did not pitch in the Venezuelan League in 1973-1974; he returned in 1974-1975, going 2-0 despite a 7.00 ERA in six games for the Águilas del Zulia. He allowed five hits, four walks and two earned in three innings for the 1975-1976 Águilas. In 1976-1977, he pitched two innings (0 ER) for the Tigres de Aragua but he gave up seven earned runs in 6 2/3 IP the next winter for them.

He finished 3-0 with a 4.46 ERA in 21 Venezuelan League games and 8-9 with a 3.82 ERA in 89 minor league games.
