Biographical Information[edit]

Si-Yo Wu was one of many Taiwanese stars whose careers ended in a gambling scandal.

Wu represented Taiwan in the 1998 World Youth Championship. He was drafted by the La New Bears in the 5th round of the 2003 CPBL Draft, and he debuted in 2004, going 5-4 with a 2.84 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 73 innings at age 22. On September 28, he was timed at 152 kmph (94.4 mph), then a record for a native hurler (broken by Yueh-Ping Lin). In '05, he had a 7-6, 3.54 record. He had his best campaign in 2006 when he went 17-3 with a 2.27 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 139 innings. He tied En-Yu Lin for the CPBL lead in wins, ranking 3rd in ERA (.54 behind Lin) and 2nd in strikeouts (67 behind Lin). In the 2006 Taiwan Series, Wu started in Game 1, but he allowed 3 runs in 3 innings. He then surrendered 3 runs in 3 2/3 innings in Game 4, but the Bears still swept the Uni-President Lions.

Wu played for the Bears in the 2006 Asia Series and drew the interest of the Chiba Lotte Marines, who signed him. He spent all of 2007 in the minors and then allowed two runs in eight innings in 2008. Let go by the Marines, Wu re-signed with the Bears. He was on Taiwan's preliminary roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic but did not make the final cut. He was not nearly as good as he was prior to his time in Japan, going 4-6 with a 5.37 ERA and 94 hits in 62 innings. In early 2010, Wu was banned from the CPBL due to his involvement in game-throwing scandals with the Bears.

Overall, Wu was 33-18 with a 3.24 ERA, struck out 335 and pitched 378 1/3 innings in 4 seasons in the CPBL.
