Nagai was on the Japanese national team in the 1969 Asian Championship as the country won its sixth title. The Yakult Atoms drafted him in the third round of the 1969 NPB draft.[1] Nagai didn't hit well with the big club, and he also didn't get many chances to prove himself. He only had 123 at-bats combined in five years with the Yakult, and he only collected 23 hits in his entire career. Nagai announced his retirement after the 1974 season.[2]
Overall, Nagai had hit .187/.214/.244 in 5 seasons in NPB.
