Biographical Information[edit]
Charles "She" Donahue was the source of a major disagreement in 1904 when various teams claimed to own him. He had been with Portland in 1903, and when Portland was bought by a new owner, he was assigned to Salt Lake City, where the team had moved. The Chicago White Sox drafted him from Salt Lake City at about the same time that the St. Louis Cardinals signed him. The decision was ultimately made that St. Louis owned him. Source: a lengthy article in Sporting Life, January 23, 1904.
After all that, he played only four games with St. Louis, and spent most of the 1904 season with the Philadelphia Phillies. The Oswego Daily Times of January 28, 1905, reported that he was traded to Indianapolis but that his position there was not clear. He was keeping in shape over the winter by playing indoor baseball. Another reference says that a "Charlie Donahue" played for Kansas City in 1905.
The Oswego Daily Times of July 1, 1898, reported on Donahue being released from "the team", presumably the local Oswego team. However, the same paper on May 1, 1899 said that Donahue had played a good game for the Oswegos and he is listed in the paper's box score.
In 1910 it was reported that Donahue, "the well-known baseball player", was working for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad.
