Biographical Information

Scott Burrell was a first-round draft pick of the Seattle Mariners in 1989, but turned down the team's six-figure offer to accept a basketball scholarship at the University of Connecticut. The next year he was drafted in the fifth round by the Toronto Blue Jays and assigned to their St. Catharines Blue Jays in the New York-Penn League. Burrell was 1-5 with a 5.86 ERA; in 7 starts he lasted just 28 innings, allowing 20 runs. He posted the highest ERA on the staff in the low-scoring league.

Burrell pitched two games for St. Catharines in '91, losing both, despite a 1.50 ERA (1 earned run, 3 total in 6 innings; just 3 hits allowed). He also made five starts for the Myrtle Beach Hurricanes (South Atlantic League) and fared well, going 27 innings in 5 starts. He posted a 2.00 ERA, struck out 31 and allowed 18 hits, while going 1-0. After the season, Burrell committed himself to basketball. In 1993 he was the 1st-round selection of the Charlotte Hornets (the 20th pick overall) and started for Charlotte as a forward for a few years. He was one of the few players who was a first-round draft choice in two major pro sports. During his basketball career he was listed as being 6' 7" tall.

His long full court throw-in allowed Tate George to hit a buzzer-beater for UConn against Clemson in the 1990 NCAA Tournament.
