Biographical Information[edit]

Satoru Miwa pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 8 years.

Miwa was drafted by the Nishitetsu Lions in the second round of the 1969 NPB draft. Since the Lions lost many pitchers in the Black Mist Scandal, Miwa entered the rotation as a rookie. He was 7-14 with a 2.91 ERA in 1970, and he ranked 7th in the Pacific League in ERA (between Keishi Suzuki and Hisashi Yamada). He was also selected for the PL team for the 1970 NPB All-Star Games, and he pitched a shutout inning with a strikeout against Akira Ejiri. He slumped to 4-10 with a 4.20 ERA in 1971, then he was removed from the rotation. He had a 4.57 ERA in 28 appearances in 1972, then his ERA was 4.57 in 25 appearances in 1973. Miwa improved to a 2.49 ERA in 26 games in 1974, and the traded him with Tetsuo Yoneyama to the Hiroshima Carp for Masaji Nishizawa and Shigeru Matsubayashi.

The Niigata native had a 1.97 ERA in 22 appearances in 1975, and he even pitched 22 2/3 consecutive innings without allowing any runs. He was still a solid reliever in the next season, and he had a 2.95 ERA in 33 games in 1976. His ERA rose to 4.25 in 34 games in 1977, then he pitched 42 games with a 2.83 ERA in 1978. Miwa pitched 26 games with a 3.38 ERA in 1979, and he announced his retirement in 1980.

Overall, Miwa was 17-40 with a 3.48 ERA, struck out 372 and pitched 792 1/3 innings in 8 years in NPB.
