Biographical Information[edit]
Sam Wise was a good-hitting infielder who played 12 years in the big leagues.
He broke in as a third baseman in his one game in 1881. From 1882 to 1888 he was a shortstop except in 1886 when he played first base more than any other position. From 1889 to 1893 he was primarily a second baseman.
He struck out a lot (leading the league in 1884), but also could hit well. His best year with the bat was 1887, when he was in the top five in the league in both batting and slugging percentage. In addition to his playing career, he was a fill-in umpire for two National League games, one in 1889 and the other in 1893.
He worked as a fireman in Akron before playing baseball, and returned to the same profession after baseball. See [1].
The most similar player is his contemporary Ned Williamson.
Notable Achievements[edit]
- 100 RBI Seasons: 1 (1890)
- 100 Runs Scored Seasons: 2 (1887 & 1893)
