Biographical Information[edit]

Sam Stell served in the Coast Guard in World War II. He played baseball and football in college after the war. He then played for the Mayfield Clothiers in 1949, hitting .299 with four home runs in 68 games. With the Tarboro Tars in 1952, he hit .308/.357/.431 with seven home runs in 106 games. He led the Coastal Plain League with 77 RBI that year, three ahead of Joseph Gauci. In a pitcher-friendly loop, he was 4th in average, tied for 8th in home runs, tied for second in triples (9, one behind Gauci), second in hits (131, 20 behind Bill Wollet) and second in slugging. He tied for 5th among the league's outfielders with 14 assists but also was second with 12 errors.

He taught and coached, including teaching at Duke University. After working for the state of North Carolina in Public Instruction, he became an associate superintendent, then superintendent of Whiteville City Schools. He also served as mayor or Emerald Isle and chair of the Carteret County Board of Commissioners.
