Biographical Information[edit]
Sam Mayer was the brother of Erskine Mayer. Sam came to the majors at age 22 with the 1915 Washington Senators under manager Clark Griffith, playing eleven games and putting up a batting line of .241/.333/.345, which was decent compared to the team's batting of .244/.312/.312. He made no errors in the field, playing mostly right field. The team's regular right fielder that year, Danny Moeller at age 30, hit .226/.319/.311.
He was five years younger than his Senators teammate Walter Johnson. He was also three years younger than his brother Erskine who pitched in the other league that year for the 1915 Philadelphia Phillies.
Sam, who was born and died in Atlanta, GA, played 17 seasons in the minors, including seven years in the middle of his career for the Atlanta Crackers. He also pitched 16 games in the minors, mostly early in his career. His brother Erskine was briefly with the Crackers, but that was years before Sam played for them. The Jewish Baseball Museum states that Sam was a fine defensive outfielder. [1]
