Biographical Information[edit]

Sam Jackson got his chance when shortstop George Wright broke a leg in 1871. Ross Barnes at second base moved over to shortstop, and Jackson played second base for 14 games in the field.

It was a team with a high batting average - .310. Barnes hit .401, Wright hit .412, and Cal McVey hit .431. Jackson hit .224.

The next year he appeared on a team that hit much lower, the Brooklyn Atlantics. While the Atlantics had an average of .252, Jackson hit .167.

Sam had previously played for the amateur Alerts in 1869 and the amateur Flower Citys in 1870 in Rochester, NY. Playing left field in a game in 1869 against the famed Cincinnati Red Stockings, he drew good notice for his play. Source: Rochester baseball history.
