Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Sam Carter played in the minor leagues from 2006 to 2009.
Carter hit .370 as a high school senior. At Diablo Valley College in 2003, he batted .320 and slugged .600. Transferring to St. Mary's, he batted .292/.322/.460 in 2004 and .350/.401/.515 with 50 RBI in 50 games in 2005. He made first-team All-West Coast Conference. He was even better his senior year, producing at a .356/.428/.607 rate with 49 runs and 51 RBI in 50 games.
Undrafted out of college, Carter was signed by scout Rich Bordi of the San Diego Padres in 2006 and split the season between the AZL Padres (.278/.418/.452 in 34 G) and the Eugene Emeralds (3 for 12, 2 2B).
He hit .267/.332/.440 with 12 home runs for the Fort Wayne Wizards in 2007 but struck out in 124 of 341 at-bats. He batted .282/.372/.456 with 37 doubles, 14 homers and 64 walks (double his 2007 total) for the Lake Elsinore Storm the following year. He drove in 82 runs, 4th among San Diego minor leaguers.
He reached the AA level with the San Antonio Missions in 2009 but was released after hitting just .161/.288/.268 in 21 games.
Overall, he hit .269/.360/.439 with 31 home runs and 155 RBI in 283 games.
