Biographical Information[edit]
Sargent "Sadie" Houck played eight seasons in the major leagues. His best season with the bat was in 1884, playing for the 1884 Philadelphia Athletics, when he hit .297 with 14 triples.
Houck was mostly a shortstop although he also played more than 100 games in the outfield.
He is said to have set the record with 40 double plays at shortstop in 1881, a record which was surpassed the following year.
He was added to the "blacklist" at a 1881 National League Meeting, barring him from playing for or against any NL team due to him having an alcohol addiction. He was reinstated in 1883.
