Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Ryan Feltner made his major league debut for the Colorado Rockies late in the 2021 season. The Rockies had drafted him in the 4th round of the 2018 amateur draft out of Ohio State University. Three years earlier, the Toronto Blue Jays had taken him in the 25th round of the 2015 amateur draft out of high school, but he had declined their offer in order to go to college. In his debut on September 5th, he allowed 6 runs in 2 2/3 innings against the Atlanta Braves and was saddled with a 9-2 loss. He made one other start that season, a no-decision, to finish at 0-1, 10.28, allowing 8 runs in 6 1/3 innings.
In 2022, Feltner pitched 20 times for Colorado, including 19 as a starter, and went 4-9, 5.83. In 97 1/3 innings, he allowed 102 hits and 35 walks for a WHIP of 1.408 and struck out 84 batters. On May 13, 2023, he was making his 8th start of the season for the Rockies was he was hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of Nick Castellanos of the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2nd inning. He fell to the ground in a heap and had to be evacuated to a local hospital in Denver, CO for further tests, although he appeared to escape potentially traumatic injuries, as he was able to stand up under his own power before being medically evacuated. He had already given up 4 runs in the 1st inning and was charged with the 7-4 loss, to bring his record for the season to 2-3, 5.86. The tests revealed that he had suffered a skull fracture and a concussion, but that he would not require surgery. He was immediately placed on the injured list. He returned to the mound on September 1 in a rehab start for the Spokane Indians (with whom he pitched briefly in 2021). He tossed three innings against the Everett AquaSox, allowed 3 hits, a run (it was earned, but may not have scored if not for an error on right fielder Braiden Ward), no walks and 3 strikeouts. The Indians won 10-1.
