Biographical Information[edit]
Rufus Smith, who started one game for the 1927 Tigers, was at Guilford College in 1924-26 along with Rick Ferrell, and came to the majors before Ferrell did.
Rufus pitched well on that one day, but spent the rest of his professional career in the minors. As for the day in question, October 2, 1927, it was a big day for Rufus' teammate Harry Heilmann, and SABR wrote an article about the day. [1]
Through 2019, there has been one other major leaguer named Rufus, that being Rufus Meadows, who played in 1926. A couple other players have been called Rufe.
