Biographical Information

South Dakota native Rube Fischer spent eleven active seasons in professional baseball from 1937 to 1949. He was absent from the game until 1957 and returned at the age of 40 and appeared in four games with the Sioux City Soos of the Western League with no apparent record for this time.

Noted for his high, overhand delivery, the New York Giants considered the 6' 4" Fischer a top prospect. His career all but ended in 1944 when he had an operation transplanting part of his shin bone to his spine. He recovered and spent five seasons (1941-1946) in the Major Leagues with the New York Giants. Rube was able to win 16 times but lost 34 with a 5.10 ERA in 108 games.

Rube spent eleven seasons in the minor leagues with a 102-91 record from 1937 to 1949 in 273 appearances. Rube had four double-digit winning seasons in his minor league career, with his best numbers coming in 1938 when he went 21-6 with a 2.49 ERA while pitching 228 innings in 27 games for the Sioux City Cowboys of the Nebraska State League. He led the league in both wins and strikeouts (242). Rube ended his minor league career in 1949 until his unusual short return to the game in 1957 at forty years of age.

Reuben Walter Fischer died on July 16, 1997 in Ashwaubenon, WI. He was eighty years of age.
