Biographical Information[edit]

Colombian pitcher Ronaldo Romero played three seasons in the Texas Rangers organization. He made his pro debut as a 17-year-old in 1988 and went 3-5 with a 3.05 ERA in 12 games with the GCL Rangers. He fell to 5-5, 4.82 for the 1989 Gastonia Rangers, walking 60 in 84 IP. Playing for Gastonia in 1990, he started a May 14th game. After the second inning, he collapsed in the dugout, and he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. The cause of death was determined to be an enlarged heart. Alfredo Edmead in 1974 had been the most recent minor leaguer to die during a game or from injuries sustained in a game.
