Biographical Information[edit]

Ron Slocum appeared in 80 games with the expansion San Diego Padres in their first three seasons. He hit .292 in his first cup of coffee in 1969, but got his most appearances the following year, when he was in 60 games. Ron was a catcher who also played a lot of middle infield (third base, shortstop and second base) and did a lot of pinch-hitting.

Ron had gone to La Jolla High School, so he was a local boy on the Padres team. He had been in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization since 1964, playing mostly catcher, but was picked up by the Padres in the 1968 expansion draft. The Padres put him with the Elmira Pioneers for most of the 1969 season, mostly at third base, but called him up in September for 13 games.

He stayed with the team in 1970, playing no games in the minors. The year 1971 saw him getting into 7 games early in the season with the Padres, but he had no hits in 20 plate appearances, and spent most of the year with the Hawaii Islanders, with whom had also played ten games in 1972.

Although Ron Slocum died in 1988, his death went unreported for over a quarter century, until his daughter provided the information to researchers in 2014.
