Biographical Information[edit]
"Rome Chambers, the North Carolina giant, who was expected to make the batsmen of the League look like 30 cents, has decided to bury his disappointment in the hills of his native State. He has left Boston for Asheville to speculate on what might have been had he been given a thorough trial by Manager Selee." - Sporting Life, June 9, 1900
Rome Chambers appeared in one game for the 1900 Boston Beaneaters. He was credited retroactively with a save, pitching the final 4 innings of a May 7 game while allowing 6 runs (5 earned). Chambers was born, attended high school and died in Weaverville, NC, near Asheville in far-western North Carolina. By 1897, he was playing in the minors with Richmond, where Jack Chesbro was a teammate. Chambers was the fourth player out of North Carolina to come to the majors and, through 2019, the only one born in Weaverville.
