Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Roland Adams faced Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente in the Puerto Rican Winter League in the mid-1950s. The superstars were then members of the Santurce Cangrejeros, and Adams was with the San Juan Senadores for two years (1954-55 and 1955-56).

In the U.S., the native of St. Thomas was with Grand Forks, an unaffiliated Class C club in the Northern League, in 1954. In 1955 he was in the Yankees chain, thanks to scout Jose Seda. He pitched in just 12 games, however, quitting baseball because of a sore arm (caused by warming up too quickly in a San Juan relief appearance) and the desire to finish his schooling. He was also homesick -- Jim Crow was an unpleasant novelty for the islander.
