Biographical Information[edit]

Roger Smith played two seasons in the minors then scouted. His son Ross Smith has also played in the pros.

Roger was taken by the California Angels in the 17th round of the 1973 amateur draft. Smith split the summer between the Idaho Falls Angels (.248/.342/.280 in 37 G) and the Quad Cities Angels (5 for 25, 2B). In 1974, he batted .207/.294/.259 in 41 games and stole 11 bases in 14 tries. He was a utility man. Overall, he hit .225/.309/.267 in 84 minor league games, with 29 runs and 29 RBI. He stole 14 bases while being caught four times. He fielded .967 in 27 games at 3H, .900 in 27 at SS, .916 in 18 at 2B and 1.000 in 9 in the OF. As a St. Louis Cardinals scout, he signed Mitchell Boggs, Terry Evans, Tyler Greene and Jess Todd.
