Biographical Information[edit]

Rodger Bastien hit .308/.400/.462 for Team USA in the 1978 Amateur World Series, with one error in eight chances. He backed up Terry Francona at DH, Howie Shapiro at 2B and Paul Zuvella at 3B. [1] He hit .357 to lead Michigan State in 1979 and hit a big 3-run homer off Steve Howe in the NCAA playoffs. [2] The Texas Rangers took him in the 35th round of the 1979 amateur draft, one round after Ray Fontenot. He hit .223/.339/.295 for the GCL Rangers that summer, with 25 walks and 21 runs in 39 games, going 7-for-8 in steals and fielding .913 at SS, starting there. It was his only season as a pro.
