Biographical Information[edit]
Roberto Sabates was a catcher for the Industriales of the Cuban National Series before defecting around 2005. He was 3 for 8 at the plate with the Industriales and had one passed ball behind the plate. Sabates was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 39th round of the 2007 Amateur Draft. He played one season in the Cubs farm system and two seasons in the independent Frontier League. For the 2007 AZL Cubs, he hit .272/.333/.398 but fielded just .955 behind the plate. In 2008, he batted .295/.328/.492 with 29 RBI in 32 games for the Rockford RiverHawks. As the starting backstop for the 2009 RiverHounds, Sabates fell to .264/.304/.374.
