Biographical Information[edit]
Roberto Mercado played baseball at the University of Connecticut at Avery Point and Fitchburg State University from 1998-2002 and completed a degree in human services in 2003. After graduation he returned to New Britain High School where he served as Dean of Students from 2004-2021.
In addition to his day job, Mercado was very active in baseball both at New Britain High School and in other local venues. He was assistant coach at the high school from 2005-2010 and head coach from 2011-2021. During these years he also was:
- 2005-2010 Head coach, American Legion Baseball in New Britain
- 2007-2010 Head coach, TD Banknorth Baseball League - prepared players for college baseball
- Summers 2014-2021 Assistant coach, Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the Cape Cod League
Mercado also gained international coaching experience as a head coach in the Goodwill Series in Australia (2017) and New Zealand (2018).
In an unusual move, the Baltimore Orioles hired Mercado to manage the Aberdeen IronBirds in 2022. It is rare for a high school coach to jump directly into coaching or managing at the professional level. Mercado returned to Aberdeen in 2023 before moving up to the Bowie Baysox in 2024.
