Biographical Information[edit]
Bob Wells was a minor league player and manager who led one team to a league championship.
A catcher during his playing days, Wells hit .283 with four home runs in 1,307 games over 20 seasons per records available. He averaged one home run every 971 at-bats. He played from 1906 to 1930 with a few interruptions in-between, experiencing his best season in 1922, when he hit .362 in 112 games for the Grand Rapids Billbobs. That year, he led the league in batting average for part of the season, though he was eventually eclipsed by Leo Payne.
He was taken by the St. Louis Browns from the Nashville Volunteers in the 1907 Rule V Draft.
He managed the Grand Rapids Billbobs (1922-1923), Terre Haute Tots (1927), Springfield Midgets (1928) and Frederick Warriors (1929-1930). In 1922, he led the Billbobs to the Central League championship.
