Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Rob Flippo played two years in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization with the Bakersfield Dodgers in 1989 and Yakima Bears in 1990. With Bakersfield he went 5 for 49 with a double and a homer while appearing in 19 games. After his playing career ended he returned to college at Fresno State University and in 1994 completed a bachelor's degree in psychology. Flippo later earned a master's degree in physical education from the University of South Alabama with an emphasis in exercise physiology.

Flippo's education is related to his first forays into college coaching. He served as an assistant coach at Fresno State for the 1996 season and with South Alabama during the 1998 season. He followed these endeavors with an assistant coaching gig at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington from 1998-2001. This position entailed working with hitters, instructing outfielders & catchers, and serving as the strength and conditioning coordinator.

After the 2001 season, Flippo spent time on the minor league Wilmington Waves staff working in the bullpen. The Waves were the Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. When the Dodgers bullpen catcher Travis Barbary wanted to move into a coaching role, the Dodgers hired Flippo as his replacement. In 2002 he was appointed the Dodgers' bullpen catcher and batting practice pitcher and held this job until the end of the 2017 season. While with the Dodgers he was the pitcher for Hee-seop Choi in the 2005 Home Run Derby and pitched to Matt Kemp in the 2011 and 2012 Home Run Derbies.

In 2018, he moved to the Miami Marlins as bullpen coordinator, reuniting with Don Mattingly, who had been the Dodgers' manager for part of his stay with the Dodgers and was now the Marlins' skipper. He stayed in this role through the 2023 season.
