Ellis led the Spartans in batting as a sophomore with a .380 average, setting a single season hits record with 60. Ellis was on the squad that helped coach Danny Litwhiler win his first of two Big Ten championships in 1971. Ellis was teammates with such great Michigan State players as Ron Pruitt and Robert Clancy.
Ellis was rushed straight to the big leagues after being plucked from East Lansing by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 1st selection in the secondary phase of the 1971 amateur draft. He spent parts of three seasons (1971 1974-1975) in the majors with the Brew Crew.
Ellis began the 1991 season as manager of the Everett Giants, but was fired on August 10th due to philosophical differences with the organization over developing players. He was replaced by first base coach Mike Bubalo.
