Biographical Information[edit]

Rip Rollins was the 23rd overall pick in the 1978 amateur draft, taken by the Philadelphia Phillies one slot ahead of outfielder Matt Winters. He was variously a pitcher, outfielder and first baseman in his brief career, finding limited success at each position.

On the mound, he was 16-24 with a 5.12 ERA in 80 games (56 starts). In 367 1/3 innings, he allowed 425 hits, 170 walks and 45 wild pitches, while striking out 185 batters. He pitched in 1978, 1979, 1983 and 1984. In 1980 and 1981, he tried playing in the field, but hit only .217/.333/.443 in 1980 (though he did managed 12 home runs) and .160/.344/.260 in 1981. He did not play at all in 1982. Overall, he batted .207/.339/.396 with 13 home runs and 55 RBI in his career.
