Biographical Information[edit]

Rico Zuccaro served as a replacement umpire for one game, when the regular umpires went on a one-day strike on August 25, 1978 in order to obtain certification for the Major League Umpires Association as an official bargaining unit. Zuccaro was the second base umpire for a game between the Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers at Tiger Stadium in hometown of Detroit, MI.

Before becoming an umpire, he played in the minor years for three seasons, from 1964 to 1966, in the Detroit Tigers chain. He was an outfielder and had a successful first year when he hit .296 in 98 games for the Jamestown Tigers of the New York-Penn League. However, he fell to .239 in 109 games for the Rocky Mount Leafs in the Carolina League in 1965, and then .228 in 43 games for the Statesville Tigers of the Western Carolinas League in his final year, 1966.

His was the final name in the alphabetical order of the 1,550+ persons who had umpired at least one major league game as of the end of the 2019 season.
