Biographical Information[edit]
The Kansas City Royals drafted infielder Richie Benes in the 23rd round of the 1996 Amateur Draft out of high school. Benes played in the Royals minor league system for two years (some sources say three years)[1] with the Royals' Gulf Coast League team. After his departure from affiliated ball, Benes played in the independent leagues from 1998-2001 and 2006-2007.
After his playing career ended, Benes went into coaching as a private instructor. He moved to the collegiate coaching ranks in 2012 as an assistant coach for Monroe College. He stayed with the Mustangs through the 2015 season. Benes moved up to Division II baseball with the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights from 2016-2018. He took another step up the collegiate coaching ranks in 2019 as an assistant coach with the Saint Peter's University Peacocks. Benes left mid-season to join the New York Mets organization. During his last four years (2015-2018) in the college ranks, Benes also served as the hitting coach for the Danbury Westerners. Danbury was a member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
Benes started his Mets career as a hitting coach for the DSL Mets 2. He was slated to return there in 2020 before COVID-19 shut down the minor league season. Benes coached the FCL Mets in 2021. He moved up to the Brooklyn Cyclones for the 2022-2023 seasons as their hitting coach. In 2024, Benes returned to the FCL Mets as a hitting coach.
