Richard R. Meier, II ("Dick")

Biographical information[edit]

Richard Meier spent three seasons in the minor league system of the Oakland Athletics.

He was chosen by the A's in the 17th round of the 1969 Amateur Draft (393rd overall). Before the 1969 season was out, he reported to the Tri-City A's in the Northwest League where he saw action in 17 games. He hit for a .176 batting average (6 for 34) with one double.

In 1970, Dick split the season with the Coos Bay-North Bend A's, the new affiliate that replaced Tri-City in the Northwest League, and the Midwest League Burlington Bees in his home state of Iowa. The outfielder improved to .221 (27 for 122) with four doubles, two triples and four home runs over the course of 43 games.

He split 1971 with the same two teams. In 28 games, Dick managed just .122 (6 for 49) with one double and one triple. His slugging percentage fell to a career low .184 for the season. Dick's most notable teammate during his minor league career was future all-star and manager Phil Garner.

Dick also served in the Army National Guard during the Vietnam War era. His post baseball career was in plumbing and construction. In his spare time, he coached girls softball and Pony League baseball in Davenport, IA. He passed away unexpectedly in December 2010 at the age of 60.
