Biographical Information[edit]
Richard Bélec was involved in the history of amateur baseball in Quebec for almost 50 years. He served as the vice-president of Baseball Canada for 14 years, and was the organization's president from 1994 to 1996. Bélec also served as director and president for the IBAF's Youth Commission for 10 years.
He helped establish Baseball Québec and served as the the organization's president for two terms from 1970 to 1972 and 1980 to 1994. For 16 years, Bélec was also president of the Quebec Junior Elite League.
As well, the busy gentleman also was involved in the creation of L’Académie Baseball Canada (ABC), a program allowing players the opportunity to play competitive baseball while earning a post-secondary education in Canada. Eric Gagné is one of the program's graduates. Denis Boucher and Marc Griffin are also listed as some of Bélec's students.
Bélec has won numerous awards in Canada. He was given Volunteer of the Year award twice by Sports-Quebec and was inducted into the Quebec Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000. His numerous activities earned him a spot in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003 as a Builder.
Outside of baseball, he had also worked as a coach in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).
