Biographical Information[edit]
Rich Nye was a promising lefthanded pitcher who won 13 games with the Chicago Cubs in 1967. He pitched one career complete game shutout. It was on May 16, 1968 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He gave up 6 hits, walked 2 and struck out 7. The losing pitcher was future Hall of Famer Don Sutton.
While his final game as a pitcher came with the Montreal Expos on August 5, 1970, his final appearance in a game came a month later, as a pinch-runner on September 2nd.
He had earned a degree in civil engineering from the University of California, but after his baseball career was ended by injuries, Nye decided to study veterinary medicine at the University of Illinois. He graduated in 1976 and was a practicing veterinarian in the Chicago suburbs until retiring in 2013.
